Miscellaneous Mascots is my latest series of designs. It stems from an idea that’s been in the back of my mind forever, and I finally got the opportunity to bring it to life. I’ve worked with collegiate designs in the past; in fact I’ve always been a fan of that retro athletic look. However, I noticed the lack of creativity in typical mascots. Bobcats, Tigers, and Bears are everywhere, but what about some of the other fun animals? I wanted to bring to life some more unique characters, with that timeless look of some of our favorite mascots.
What goes into this series? This answer always starts the same: an idea. I find myself getting inspired by a creature and trying to recall the last time I’ve seen them as a mascot, if ever. The inspiration can come from all over. I found myself visiting the zoo, and it was ‘inspiration overload.’ All these fun animals that I’m sure people would love to cheer for. Once I get the initial mascot idea, I look to vintage mascots and like-designs, to help drawing the initial sketch. After I’ve created the mascot itself, the rest sort of comes together naturally: the supporting designs, slogans, and variations.
What I love about it? Who doesn’t love animals?! And it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from you can root for your favorite. Before I started this series, I found myself shopping for other team’s apparel and was conflicted. Do I root for my home team, or the team whose mascot I like? In this case it doesn’t matter; there are no cities or allegiances, only fun characters. Pick your favorite, and just have fun with it.
What’s next? We’ve just released wave one of this series and already have most of wave two wrapped up as well. After that it might be time to focus on some new designs, but I can totally see coming back and adding to this series even more. With so many possibilities for characters and mascots, there’s a lot more fun to be had.
